Rural Livelihood Project

About the project

We have started this Eco friendly, biodegradable leaf plate making technology in way back 33 years. These leaf plate market slowly captured by non biodegradable metaled silver foil, stamping foil and printed green foil (since 1996) and spreaded all over globally. At present market consumption in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is 4.5 cores of plastic coated plates and bowls per day. If these plastic coated plates are replaced by leaf plates and bowls, we can provide (one lakh tribals and rural women) value addition to the primary collectors by 100% to 500% and create employment generation to the rural women.

The Aim of the Project is to

  • Establish self-help clusters (SHC) with about 20 rural women per cluster with a potential to earn Rs 130/- to 430/- per member per day.

Hand holding by ‘Annapurna’ is for technical-know how, supply of machinery, other raw material supply, marketing of the finished goods etc.,

Uniqueness of the product & the proposal

  • Biodegradable
  • Eco-Friendly
  • Alternative to usage of Plastic coated plates
  • Wastage trims are converted in to paper which is reusable
  • Fulfils moral obligation to be socially responsible
  • Primary collectors and leaf stitching processors will maintain good health, unlike Beedi workers. (Primary collector of Beedi leaf and its processors are facing lot of health issues like cancer etc.,). Many medical values to the end-user.

Process flow at the cluster level

The process of the cluster of SHC’s from the villages with level 300 population is as follows:

  • Raw leaves collection from the forest
  • Cleaning and grading of leaves, drying in cool & clean place
  • Hand stitching, thread stitching on sewing machines
  • Such stitching leaves will be used for the top layer
  • The bottom layer will be 8-10 microns bio-degradable low density polyethylene with three ply corrugated sheet at the bottom
  • These plates are pressed for 5 to 8 seconds at 120 degree centigrade for better curing and bacteria saddle activity
  • Finished products are sold in domestic & international markets

Role of Annapurna

  • Adequate Training to the beneficiaries
  • Help in collection & selection of raw material from the forest
  • Identification of location to set-up the unit
  • Supply of required machinery
  • Maintenance and guidance
  • Supply of other raw material from mandal HQ
  • Collection of finished Goods
  • Payment process to the members of the cluster through bank
  • Training to cluster Members on the environment Protection in the process of picking up the forest leaves.
